The Birth of Epic Poetry
Long before Netflix binges, humans gathered around fires to hear tales of heroes and gods. These stories, rich in adventure and moral lessons, were passed down orally, eventually etched onto clay tablets. The 'Epic of Gilgamesh' from ancient Mesopotamia is one such tale, chronicling the exploits of a king in his quest for immortality. Similarly, Homer's 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey' from ancient Greece narrate epic journeys and battles, while India's 'Mahabharata' and 'Ramayana' weave complex narratives of duty, love, and war. These foundational epics set the stage for narrative poetry as a means to preserve culture and entertain.
