The Origins of Love Poetry

Love poetry has ancient roots, appearing in some of humanity's earliest writings. The "Song of Songs" in Hebrew scripture (circa 950 BCE) contains sensual love poetry. In ancient Greece, Sappho (c. 630–570 BCE) wrote passionate lyrics about love and desire that continue to influence poetry today. In Rome, poets like Catullus and Ovid explored themes of love and desire in their works.
