On 1st looking into Hadden’s pocket Vocabulary of Medical Terms( 5th ed, 1917).* I didn’t know acholia was the absence of bile Or that agraphia meant I couldn’t write ideas Or that a cervix is simply a neck. I could have guessed that ectopia was something out of place Or that filaria was a thread worm found in blood Or that gnathalgia was a pain in the jaw. I should have known hypodremic means under the skin Or that idrosis is the condition of sweating Or that lupus can destroy one’s face. Who knew that an Os is just a bone? Or that a pes is simply a flat foot? Or the scolex is the head of a tape worm? No wonder John Keats gave up medicine for poetry.
